“The Wairarapa Cricket Association are proud to announce the appointment of a Female Development Officer to a newly created role for the District.
One of the themes within the Wairarapa over the last few years has been growing the female game from within the province. With this philosophy it is apt that one of Wairarapa’s most successful young sportswomen of recent years has taken up the new role.
Katherine van Woerkom, a product of Wairarapa College, and recent New Zealand U/18 and U/21 Hockey representative has taken up the challenge, and is looking forward to being involved in another sport that she has a passion for.
Whilst at Wairarapa College Katherine was a member of a National Champion winning 1st XI hockey team, but was also a 1st XI cricketer for all 5 years at the school, being handy with the bat, a more than capable wicket-keeper, and rolling her arm over to bowl when required. She was team mates with current CD Hind Melissa Hansen for much of this time.
Recently Katherine returned to her roots to coach the schools 1st XI hockey team at the Federations Cup during tourney week.
Over the course of the season the WCA development team will implement new ideas to appeal to a wider female audience with this addition to the team. Katherine will also be involved in the Districts female age-group representative program and assist with organizing the Lower North Island Development Girls tournament in Masterton in January.
Katherine will be working part-time 25 hours per week for a 6 month contract, starting Monday September 26. Her email address for contact will be fdo@wairarapacricket.co.nz
