CAPS GALORE FOR CD A WOMEN

There will be up to 12 new caps this weekend when the first Women's CENTRAL DISTRICTS A squad in 27 years takes the field in Hamilton.

The team will be captained by Hawke's Bay's skipper SOPHIE PYOTT and coached by Nelson's BJ BARNETT, and play a T20 against Northern Districts A women on Saturday afternoon, followed by a one-dayer on Sunday with both matches free admission at St Paul's Collegiate.

Pyott is one of a trio of Hawke's Bay, Nelson Nyxons and Manawatu representatives named in the twelve, joined by two Wairarapa reps and Taranaki's hard-hitting batter JESSIE HOLLARD making up the squad.

Nelson’s PRIYANAZ CHATTERJI meanwhile brings plenty of experience as a former Wellington Blaze and Scotland representative.

Many of the players are graduates from CD’s national champion Under 19 Women’s squad and three players - Nelson twins ANNA and KATE GAGING, and Wairarapa's GEMMA SIMS, have already represented the Central Hinds. Hawke’s Bay pace bowler ANIELA APPERLEYwas also last summer named in the Hinds squad for the first time, sadly for rounds that were ultimately washed out without a starting XI named.

Game one will be the first in the T20 format ever played by a CD A women's side, while the last time a Central Districts A women's team officially took the field in a one-dayer was on 13 January 1995, at an NZC national women's second XI tournament in Dunedin.

With players like Hawke's Bay stalwart Cath Atkins and Donna Trow, CD played off, and won, against Canterbury for third at the six-team tournament, finishing just one point behind runner-up Auckland while Wellington took the title.

After the 90s, Central Districts fielded age-group teams ranging across the years from Under-18s to Under-23s, with considerable success at national level.

The Central Districts Under 19 women's side now flies this flag as the current NZC national champion, an age band aligned with the new ICC Women's Under 19 World Cup.

Tomorrow's CD A T20 in Hamilton is set to begin at 3pm.
