Whats on?

Celebrating our history

Established in 1950, CDCA is unlike any other Major Association in New Zealand, with a vast geographic spread either side of the Cook Strait. We can proudly look back and celebrate how we have together regularly overcome some of the obstacles this creates.

Through strong team bonds and never giving in, the men and women from our eight District Associations – Hawke's Bay, Manawatū, Wairarapa, Horowhenua-Kāpiti, Whanganui, Taranaki, Nelson and Marlborough have often been up against sides with far longer histories and bigger resources, yet we have proven time and again that CD is a side to reckon with.

After years of campaigning the national body, CDCA fielded its first men’s representative team in the first-class Plunket Shield in 1950. Formed in January 1979, the Central Districts Women's Association fielded its first team against New Zealand Under 23, subsequently gaining entry to the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield in the 1979/80 season. Then in 1992, the New Zealand Women’s Cricket Council merged to form NZC, bringing women’s and men's teams under the same umbrella for the first time and further developing the pathway to representative honours.

Not everything has changed. CD still faces the annual challenges brought about by our geography and resources. But we're a small team that punches hard, determined as ever to show up the big cities! Our eight Districts continue to provide crucial Community (club and schools cricket) as well as junior development programmes within each region, while CDCA manages the framework and High Performance pathway that leads to Domestic and International representation.

We are extremely proud of the fine cricketers who have represented the Central Stags and Hinds over the past seven decades, and of course those who have had the fortune to go on to represent our country.

Let's keep that going, together.

Did You Know?

Family connections are so strong in cricket....

• Central Stags alumnus Ben Wheeler is the grandson of Ray Dowker, a Canterbury Plunket Shield cricketer who was a 1955 NZ Cricket Almanack Player of the Year. Ben is a younger brother of rugby's Joey Wheeler

• Central Hind Natalie Dodd is the cousin of Andy Dodd who was a NZ U19 rep alongside Kane Williamson in the U19 World Cup in Malaysia. Did you know Stags wicketkeeper-batsman Dane Cleaver is Williamson's first cousin?

Gill Hurley was a Central Hinds rep from 1989 to 1993. In 2017/18, daughter Taila Hurley made her Hinds debuts in both formats. Taila's cousin Courtney Sim also represented the Hinds from 2004 to 2009

Stags alumnus George Worker had a great uncle Rupert Vivian de Renzy Worker (1896-1989) who was also a left-handed batsman. Rupert debuted for Auckland in the 1914/15 Plunket Shield and also represented Canterbury, Otago and Wellington in a 15-year career - he was a school teacher. Cricket writer Dick Brittenden described Worker senior as "a most brisk and businesslike man in nearly everything he did" and a batsman who made most of his runs on the leg side... sound familiar?

• Brother and sister Peter and Sara McGlashan both went on to represent NZ after starting their careers with CD. Their grandfather Robin Schofield (1939-1990) set a first-class record the first time he kept for CD in the Plunket Shield, with 7 dismissals in an innings and 9 for the match
