Napier kids will have a rare opportunity to train with a top sports team this Wednesday 11 December 2019 when national Dream 11 Super Smash champions the Central Stags pass on tips to tomorrow’s cricketers at Nelson Park.
The full Stags squad is in town for game one of their Dream 11 Super Smash national T20 title defence, which starts under lights at McLean Park this Friday night. After training at Nelson Park tomorrow, the players will lead a fun, free skills session for five to 16-year-olds of all abilities at nearby Nelson Park, from 4PM until 5.30PM (Wednesday).
“It doesn’t matter whether or not you’ve played the game,” says star spinner Ajaz Patel. “If you’ve never tried cricket before, this is your chance to try some fun cricket drills with us, and we’re all looking forward to having a fun time with autographs, free giveaways and selfies too. If you have played cricket before, you can try facing me in the nets!”
BLACKCAP Patel (above) said the squad has been enjoying the brilliantly fine, warm weather as Hawke’s Bay turns on the sunshine ahead of the big first game on Friday — a rematch with the rival team the Stags defeated last summer for the title, the Knights.
“All the BLACKCAPS not involved in the Test series over in Australia are available for these games so it’s going to be a huge game first-up,” said Patel.
“The Knights are a very strong side and, after meeting them in the Grand Final for two years straight, I think it speaks for itself that this will be an exciting game first up, a very good contest between bat and ball.”
With a host of internationally capped players in their midst, the Stags have been Grand Finalists for three years straight and the McLean Park gates will open at 6PM on Free Friday for the public to head down with plenty of time before the first ball of the season at 7.10PM.
Team mascot The Stag will be meeting and greeting punters at the main Latham Street gate until 6.30PM with prizes on offer for the best selfie or photo with The Stag on game night and spot prizes including autographed Stags gear, game tickets and double movie passes throughout the evening - if you’re wearing green to support the home side.
Big-hitting Stags captain Tom Bruce (below) has pointed out that pink is in fact not a flattering colour, and that everyone should turn up in green on Green Friday the 13th.
“We’ll certainly all be wearing green out on the park, and we think if you’re coming along it would be great if you wear green too. I hear it’s scientifically proven that you look better in green.”
With great new gourmet food and beverage options at McLean Park this summer and a suite of fun family activities at the game, the one-off Free Friday is set to be a big hit with the Napier public.
The Stags will play three Dream 11 Super Smash T20s at the venue over the holiday season, the other two matches double-value doubleheaders with the Central Hinds — against the Canterbury Magicians and Canterbury Kings (under lights) on 23 December; and against the Otago Sparks and Otago Volts (under lights) on 2 January 2020.
