BRAD SCHMULIAN JOINS STAGS IN LINCOLN

BRAD SCHMULIAN

Brad Schmulian, the man who scored a New Zealand record 203 on first-class debut, is once again in line for his List A (one-day) debut for the Central Stags tomorrow, after further injuries to the squad.

Schmulian was named in the Stags’ Ford Trophy squad for the first time ahead of this season’s opening round in Palmerston North two Sundays ago, carrying the drinks in that match before dropping out of the squad when Blair Tickner and Ajaz Patel returned from NZ A duty for the side’s second round fixture in Auckland.

However, after both Blair Tickner (shoulder) and Christian Leopard (groin niggle) sustained injuries in yesterday’s third-round match against Northern Districts, mercurial Schmulian has joined the team in Lincoln and is once again in line for a potential List A and Ford Trophy debut, if named in tomorrow’s playing XI.

The Central Stags’ early season campaigns have been plagued by injury this summer, with a number of regular faces yet to take the park in either the first-class or one-day format as they return from preseason surgery or injury.

The Stags now find themselves in the uncustomary position of being on the bottom rung of a national one-day table, the only side yet to get a win in the 10-round Ford Trophy — despite a brilliant batting performance in their opening round against Canterbury, before rain forced an abandonment and split points.

Having named an initial squad of 13 for this week’s three centralised rounds at Lincoln, the Stags will take a squad of 12 into tomorrow’s fourth round against the Wellington Firebirds who are coming off a big win on the same Lincoln No.3 ground.

Both Hawke’s Bay’s Schmulian, who has played 13 matches for the side at first-class (Plunket Shield) level, and Taranaki’s Ryan Watson will be in line to play their first full Ford Trophy match for the Stags — Watson having made his debut in the opening round without batting or bowling before the match was called off due to rain early in the second innings.

The match will be livescored with video highlights at www.nzc.nz

After this week, the Stags will switch to the defence of their Dream 11 Super Smash title, with the free-admission opening match on the evening Friday 13 December a big rematch against last season’s beaten finalists the Knights, under lights at McLean Park.

The business end of The Ford Trophy will resume following the conclusion of the Dream 11 Super Smash holiday season window, with round six of the one-dayers beginning on 26 January 2020.
