TYLER ANNAND ELEVATED TO STAGS CONTRACT

Central Districts Cricket has elevated 21-year-old Hawke’s Bay paceman Tyler Annand to the season’s roster of contracted Central Stags players.

Annand gained his first professional contract with the squad for the first time last summer, and began this season as a member of the wider (uncontracted) squad.

He regains a contract as a result of Stags captain Tom Bruce moving to a Casual Playing Agreement for the remainder of the 2025/26 season.

Bruce will remain available to play for the Stags in all formats but, from the end of this month, will miss part of the season as he heads to the UAE to play for the Desert Vipers in the upcoming International League T20 (ILT20) league.

The ILT20 begins in early December, with its final scheduled for 5 January, 2026.

The Stags begin their Super Smash title defence in Palmerston North on 27 December and under the terms of the NZC Master Agreement, as Bruce is not available for the entirety of the Super Smash window, he is obliged to move to a casual playing arrangement.

Now officially representing Scotland at international level, the 34-year-old said it had been difficult to weigh up his feelings about missing the start of the Super Smash with his beloved Stags and the opportunity to test himself with a new challenge.

“I would like to thank CD Cricket for allowing me to take up this opportunity, after speaking with [chief executive] Lance Hamilton, [high performance manager] Dave Meiring and my teammates.

“I wouldn’t have been comfortable doing this without the support of the team and management, and I’m very grateful for this opportunity at this stage in my career.”

Depending on whether the Desert Vipers progress in the ILT20, Bruce could miss between one and five matches at the front end of this summer’s Super Smash.

“I’m 100 per cent committed to returning to the team following this overseas playing opportunity, and will be looking forward to continuing the campaigns with the Stags at the conclusion of the ILT, whenever that turns out to be for me.”

CD Cricket will name a replacement captain for the Stags in the coming weeks.

“The Stags have got a strong squad with plenty of depth,” said Bruce, “and it creates a great opportunity for further players to step up, as well as take on leadership responsibilities.”

Meiring said CD Cricket was confident Bruce remained committed to the team.

“Whilst it’s always a shame not to have the full services of someone with Tom’s ability and stature in the team, we’re also supportive of Tom taking up this opportunity and excited that he will still be pulling on a Stags shirt around this commitment.

“As always, it presents an opportunity for someone else to fill the void, and either start or continue their journey in Domestic cricket.

“We’ll look forward to watching Tom in action, and hope that he returns in good form for the back end of the Super Smash campaign.”
