SILVER FOR OVER-60S!

Taranaki's Roger Stachurski, Greg Shearer and Steve Cunningham ahead of the Final

The New Zealand Over-60s put together a strong showing at the inaugural Over 60s Cricket World Cup, hosted by Queensland Veterans Cricket on Australia's Sunshine Coast this month.

The Kiwi side strung together five consecutive victories in the lead-up to the final, playing Pakistan for the trophy - which Pakistan won by seven wickets after a tight bowling performance.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, New Zealand was able to post a competitive 173/9, highlighted by a Russell Drake half century (51) and ably supported by Neil Rogers (45) and opener Allan Bligh (21).

In reply, Pakistan got off to a positive start thanks to Muhummad Aslam (71) before he was dismissed by former Canterbury spin bowler Andrew Nuttall.

Nuttall continued his good form from the past five matches, taking 3 wickets for just 24 runs.

It wasn’t to be enough, however, as Pakistan chased down the total in the 42nd over to be crowned winners of the tournament.

Batsmen Russell Drake and Graeme Inglis finished as the top run-scorers for New Zealand over the tournament, while bowlers Robert Stachurski - from Taranaki - and Andrew Nuttall led the bowling effort.
