AROUND THE TRAPS WITH JAMIE HOW

Every month we will catch up with a CD Alumni member and get to know them a bit better.

This month we are privileged to chat to Jamie How, Jamie is a former Central Stags player, playing 370 matches for the Stags and captaining the Central Stags 39 first class matches, which is the most for anyone captaining the Central Stags.

You’ve played 370 matches for the Stags across T20 and ODI, do you have any stand out matches from that time?

There’s certainly many highlights (and lowlights!), but any time we won a final to win a trophy has to be a highlight. Those changing room moments with your mates are always the most memorable. If I had to choose one, it would probably be when we beat a star studded Canterbury team in the One Day final at Jade stadium in 2004. Craig Spearman hitting Paul Wiseman for 26 off an over and us scoring over 350 to win. I was pretty young back then but it was such a good day (and night!)

What are you up to now, and are you still involved in cricket today?

After I retired from cricket, I was lucky enough to find my way into the Marketing Department at Toyota NZ. About 8 years on I’m the Toyota NZ Brand Manager leading some big campaigns. I’m definitely still learning, but enjoying the challenges it throws up. I am still somewhat involved in cricket, enjoying being on the Board of Manawatu Cricket, trying to contribute and help develop the game in Manawatu and Central Districts.

Do you have a standout memory from playing for the Stags?

My standout memory of the Stags has to be the brotherhood you develop with your teammates. Sure there are tough times being on the road for so long, but that also helped us grow closer than any other team. The unique characters we seem to generate (generally all fast bowlers..) and just sharing the highs and lows that cricket throws at you- it certainly is a unique time of your life.

Who was your sporting hero growing up?

From a cricket perspective Martin Crowe. But I idolised many different players from multiple sports growing up- Michael Jordan, Gary Lineker, Grant Fox.. whatever sport you were playing you pretended to be your favourite player

Favourite ground to play?

Lords- for obvious reasons. But also Pukekura Park and McLean Park, the homes of CD Cricket.
